A pack of chamomile pots in three sizes.

Whilst most plants in the garden are dying back for the winter, chamomile is flowering its heart out. This rare native, now found only in a few sites in the wild deserves a place in any garden, whether as part of herbaceous planting, in the wild garden, or given a place of honour as a chamomile lawn.

In the garden, to make a fragrant lawn, plant at 9 inches apart, keeping watered until established, but to make it easy on yourself, plant in autumn or winter when there should be no need to water. The ground should be well-drained, so if your chosen patch isn't, incorporate some sharp sand to improve the drainage, and get the plants off to a good start. The plants should make good ground cover in a season, and if kept trimmed all summer and left to grow up in September, will flower well into the winter. The white flowers are rich in nectar, providing emergency food for any insects foolish enough to be still flying about in the winter months, and if left to go to seed, will also feed any finches visiting your garden.
